Ahead of a private beta for the feature in Fallout 4 in June, it was revealed that mod files for Sony's console had a maximum size of 900MB, compared to 2GB on Xbox One.

Issues had previously arisen with bringing mods to PS4 though. Just two days ago, Bethesda's Pete Hines told Metro that 'we absolutely, positively want to get PS4 mods out as fast as humanely possible'. The decision on Sony's part appears to have been a recent one.

'We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.' However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available. 'We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. The developer and publisher added: 'Like you, we are disappointed by Sony's decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. While I still prefer the PC as a gaming platform, the hardware differences between the Xbox One, PS4, and a traditional gaming PC are smaller this generation than theyвЂ™ve ever been before.In a post on the company's blog, Bethesda said: 'After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.'Д«ethesda places the blame for the decision entirely at Sony's feet. But itвЂ™s still nice to see modding support come to consoles in limited fashion. The limitations on adding new assets to FO4 seems to be a significant roadblock compared with what PC users can do. Unlike SkyrimвЂ™s DLC, FO3, or FNV, all of which made some effort to add additional plot and story, FO4вЂ™s mostly focused on settlement building and gadgetry (Far Harbor was the only significant piece of additional storytelling). While FO4 may have been a good FPS, it was a terrible RPG - and the ending is so tonally flat and meaningless that it killed any interest I mightвЂ™ve had in returning to the game. Personally, I think the Skyrim update is more interesting than the Fallout 4 refresh. ItвЂ™s not clear if the new features Bethesda is referring to constitute a marginal update to bring the gameвЂ™s console version into line with what the PC can do, or if the company is releasing an update for the game.

Right now, the PC and console versions of Fallout 4 look fairly similar, with the PC offering some increased fidelity and graphics options in some cases.

The PlayStation 4 Pro offers even more firepower than the original PS4, which likely puts 4K in range - especially since the graphics updates Bethesda has showcased appear to focus more on the gameвЂ™s lighting engine than on upgraded textures or new levels of detail.

ThatвЂ™s honestly not very surprising - Skyrim is a PS3-era title and weвЂ™ve already seen how developers like Naughty Dog were able to take a late-generation title that was heavily optimized for the PS3 (The Last of Us) and improve visual quality on the original PS4 while simultaneously boosting the frame rate. ItвЂ™s not clear how the two companies came to agree on extending modding support for SonyвЂ™s new system, but Skyrim Special Edition will arrive with modding options on SonyвЂ™s console when it ships on October 28.Д«ethesda also announced that Skyrim Enhanced Edition will run at native 4K on the PS4 Pro. Previously, this had been in some doubt - while Bethesda announced plans to bring FO4 mod support to both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, updates from earlier this summer suggested that Sony wasnвЂ™t keen on the idea and Bethesda might scrap it altogether. Game developer Bethesda Softworks has announced the upcoming Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 will both be receiving mod support on the PS4.
